One of the most important factors when deciding to study for a nursing career is choosing the right nursing college. Whether you are just starting out on your nursing career or are doing an advanced course, the right college is important. There are legions of nursing schools in America, and just about every city has at least one accredited school. This can be a daunting project to undertake and many people put the research off for too long and then find that they have left it too late and have to settle for just any nursing college.

Tips on Choosing the Perfect Nursing College

Whether you are intending on studying in a classroom or online, and no matter whether you are doing an LPN, BSN, RN, MSN or any other course, there are certain factors which you need to think about when choosing the best college:

Accreditation

Accreditation is important as any credits that you earn from your courses will be applied to any follow-up courses you do. For instance, the credits that you earn during your studies for a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing will be taken into consideration when you decide to study for a Masters Degree in Nursing.

It is possible to get a decent education from schools which are not accredited, but his is not recommended, especially if you are intending studying further.
The US has two National Accrediting Organizations for General Nursing; the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission and The Commission on Collegiate Nursing.
Various specialties have their own Accrediting Organizations; The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and The American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation.
Make sure that the nursing college which you want to attend is accredited for the programs you wish to study.

NCLEX Pass Rate

Find out what the school's pass rate is for the NCLEX exam. A good pass rate shows that that particular school teaches well.
Some schools have a high failure rate for this exam, and they are not the nursing college at which you want to study.

Hands-On Experience

The more hands-on clinical experience you get whilst you are completing your training the better for you, so check how much time the school you are interested in offers on clinical rotations.

Will you be able to observe and even possibly assist in the type of nursing in which you are interested?

Location

In a larger school which is based in a thriving Metropolis you would probably have more access to outside training opportunities and mentors. There would also be better access to more professional organizations which you could use to your best advantage to make contacts for when you are ready to work.
A college in a smaller town may suit you better as this type of college normally offers more personal tuition and that may suit your needs better.
A college which is far from where you normally reside could end up being very expensive in either accommodation or traveling expenses.

Cost

Cost is obviously important, as you cannot study well if you are worried about paying for your classes.
Tuition can differ quite radically from one nursing college to the next, but do not let the cost be the only factor putting you off as there are many bursaries, scholarships and financial packages available.

Although all teaching is supposed to be the same no matter where in the country or at which school it is taught, there are differences, and the kind of education that you receive at the nursing college that you decide to attend could mean a huge difference to the positions which you could get. You may decide to move somewhere else in the country or even go overseas, so you need to make sure that the nursing college at which you study has an excellent reputation and is recognized as such.
