Statistics show that single parent families are continuously increasing in number every year. This is rather unfortunate because a family should ideally consist of a father, a mother and a child (or a few children). Reports show that most single parent families are headed by a mother. Today, there are about 14 million single parent families in the United States and 21 million children are being raised by one parent alone.

They are challenged to raise their children alone and are obligated to fulfill many tasks and responsibilities all at the same time. Single parenthood is very challenging not only economically, but equally importantly, emotionally. Emotional struggles brought by a divorce or the death of a partner can be very daunting, not only to the parent but also to the children. Children may in fact take it more seriously, and this can affect their outlook in life more than you can imagine.

Children are supposed to be taught the basics of life which include being loved and protected and secure at home. Their house should be their home and safe haven, and their parents should be their first teachers. Being given the role of both mother and father in a single-parent family setup, economic responsibilities may take all the energy of being one, such that he or she can no longer fulfill well his or her emotional responsibilities to the child. Oftentimes, they focus more on how to get enough money to sustain their children's basic needs, such as the need for food, clothing and shelter. And so, he or she forgets that at the end of the day, what the children want and need the most is their parent's love.

Researchers have discovered that children of single parent families experience difficulties starting out life outside their home. Most of them either become anti-social or misbehaving children and teenagers. Every single thing that you do affects your children's behavior. For example, if you often forget to tell your child "I love you," he or she will then tend to unconsciously look for love and affection constantly in later years because he wants to see how it feels to be loved by a person. And because the children did not receive enough loving from you (at least in their perception), they will look for it outside your home.

These simple things have a critical influence on your children's behavior. Everything that you show your children, they will apply in their own lives. Everything you say to them, they will believe. Now, we're not saying that children from single parent families have all turned out to be bad people because of their childhood situation, but a lot of them have, so keep in mind that your children need to be loved and not just fed.

Families may not be the ideal setup, but it can always work out well, of course. If you are one, you can always seek help from your relatives and friends in raising your kids. You can always have people come over to help make your home maintain positive vibes and assume a feeling of "normalcy" or even cheer. This way, the children will be less likely to misbehave and they will learn to socialize well. Being surrounded by people whom you love will also get you through tough times in life.

As a single parent, keep in mind that what is important is that you show your love to your children not only by giving them their material needs but by also letting them feel how much they mean to you. You can always start by saying "I love you" every night when you tuck them in bed.
